As an artist, I am more of a short term project person than someone who can (and will) invest a long time developing and then producing their creative expression. I’m not sure whether that has to do with raising small children (now grown) or always having a day job. Anyway, since time seems to be at a premium for me, a series of small drawings along a theme give me a sense of accomplishment and keep my skills up (to some degree).

Several (as in many) years ago I took a course in colored pencil at SCAD and have been hooked on Prismacolors ever sense. I love the small amount of effort it takes to blend and the variety of texture you can achieve with the most basic of tools: the pencil. (Albeit a colored pencil.)

I call these little drawings of mine trifles. They give me pleasure and so I am sharing them with you. One at a time.

Thanks for visiting.

A really good friend sent me Felties: How to Make 18 Cute and Fuzzy Friends by Nelly Pailloiux and I couldn’t help but dive right in and whip some of these cuties out. (See photo.) The patterns are truly easy to cut, the directions easy and the materials needed are few.

Felt is such a versatile material and inexpensive (if you don’t mind using the acrylic versions). Wool felt can be reserved for less frivolous projects. Check out this little book on Amazon.con or Barnes & Noble’s site. These little felties will make great little stocking stuffers!

Now, go make something.

Yes, you.

I just finished watching the family of Kirby Brown being interviewed on Larry King Live. If you don’t know, Kirby Brown – a reportedly vivacious, energetic and physically fit 38 year old young woman – died at the Spiritual Warrior Retreat led by self-help author and entrepreneur James Ray. Her death was one of three during a sweat lodge led by James Ray on October 9, 2009. In all, more than two dozen of the participants were airlifted or driven by rescue teams to local hospitals in Sedona, Arizona. By report, there were more than 50 participants in the sweat lodge.

When I first heard of this tragedy I thought, “How can that be? Surely James Ray wouldn’t bring harm to his retreat followers…” I have read his books and own a couple of his seminars on tape so I reserved judgment until I heard that, instead of staying in Sedona and being near his fallen and injured “followers”, James Arthur Ray left the state of Arizona that same night and flew home to California and is still holding seminars. He reportedly left a note for the seminar goers saying he was in prayer and meditation. He is holding seminars and selling retreats while the families of the dead are attending funerals. Like it’s just another day at the office.

He left them. Abandoned them. And, according to some reports, he is still not talking with the authorities or the press…

I know people who have picked up an injured dog on the side of the road and taken them to the vet and waited through the surgery… for a dog they don’t even know. Ray left his group – the people who had paid $9000+ for this event.

Lesson? When people tell you who they are, believe them.

That’s all I have to say about that. Hit the search engines or his Facebook page if you want to know more. I’m done with it.
